Hear the editors discuss their work on these films.

Did you know the first cinematic depiction of Black Love was a kiss between Saint Suttle and Gertie Brown filmed in 1898. This film is remarkable, because stands out and above a cinematic era filled with negative stereotypes and racist caricatures.  In the 20 second clip named “Something Good-Negro Kiss,” shot by William Selig, the couple hug and kiss, hold hands and kiss again; all the while, expressing so much joy and affection.
Fun Fact: “Something Good-Negro Kiss” is actually a re-interpretation of Thomas Edison’s The Kiss, which was performed by a well-known Black-face, minstrel performer. Knowing this, gives context to why Selig may have wanted to give Black actors their own chance to show cinematically what Black love looks like.
In 2018, the film was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry.

Cut to Black: Stephanie Brown, Dialogue Editor

What’s your job? Dialogue Editor

List the credits your most proud of: I look back on all of my credits in fondness, usually because of the people involved and the experiences I had on them. However, when I first moved out to LA, I was an intern on “The Matrix,” and worked on the subsequent movies. Knowing how much of an impact those movies have had the movie industry makes me feel proud have had some small part of that. I was also the Sound Supervisor on the “Crips and Bloods: Made in America” documentary. As someone who is not from Los Angeles, it was very humbling working on that documentary and learning a little about the history of South Los Angeles, and the factors that lead up to the subject matter of the documentary.

What are you working on right now? Sylvester Stallone has done a recut of “Rocky IV,” and I am the Dialogue and ADR Supervisor.

Who are your mentors? To be honest, everyone I work with, I learn something. However, when I first started off in the industry three people took me under their wing and have had the greatest influences on my career: Dane Davis, Julia Evershade and Nancy Barker.

Movies I am excited about: I have always loved movies from a young child and my favorite movies/genres are straight out action films. Always have and always will. They encompass for me what I want when I go to the movies: a ridiculous escape. I am a ‘believer’ in the “Fast and Furious” series and eagerly await “Fast 9.” No shame.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given: Always honor your word and intention.

What’s a little know fact about you? Hidden talent? I know tons of useless movie trivia, and I can move my ears.

What is your favorite Black movie moment? Like I mentioned before, growing up I just loved action movies (comedies are a close second) and silly as it may sound Ernie Hudson’s character Winston in “Ghostbusters.” When he shows up to apply to be a Ghostbuster, it was a completely unexpected moment for me at such a young age and created such a dynamic in the movie that makes It one of my all time favorites and he says one of my favorite movie lines of all time, “Ray, when someone asks if you’re a god, you say YES!”

Was there a television show/movie that inspired you to pursue your career: I remember in high school one of my friends had a laser disc of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and we were watching a behind the scenes piece on the making of and they had a segment on the how the sound was made. Blew my mind and planted the seed.

What’s your professional mantra? Be someone people want to work with.

What was the last show/movie that left you speechless? I don’t remember the last movie/show that left me speechless, but I do remember the first: “LA Confidential.”

Cut to Black: Sharia Lynn Davis, Assistant Editor

What’s your job? My current job is an Assistant Editor for various movies/films.

List the credits you’re most proud of. My very first movie, “Get On Up,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “Red Sparrow,” “Good Boys,” and “Jungle Cruise.”

What are you working on right now? An animated Disney+ series scheduled to air sometime this year.

Who and what are your influences and/or mentors? In addition to the strong women in my family who have been my role models, I have been influenced by the many editors that I have worked with. I have also had the opportunity to be mentored by editors, Joi McMillon, ACE and Terilyn A. Shropshire, ACE who have offered their support and encouragement as I continue in this field.What books are you reading, shows are you watching and/or movies you’re excited about? I am currently reading Trevor Noah’s “Born a Crime.” It’s a great book and history lesson told from the viewpoint of a young boy growing up in post-apartheid South Africa.

Currently, my favorite shows are “Cobra Kai,” “Your Honor,” and “This Is Us.”  And I am looking forward to seeing “Coming to America 2”. During this difficult time, we all need a laugh and I hope it meets my expectations.

What would be your superhero name? My superhero name would be TVShay. I have always been amazed at the wonders of “TV” since I was a small child and looked forward to one day having a part in “TV” and finding ways to make it better.

What are your Black History Month memories and any cultural or historical impacts on your life? Before joining the Editors Guild, I was a television reporter for six years at a station in Toledo, Ohio. Every February, another reporter and I would write, shoot and edit Black History vignettes to give our viewers a brief history lesson on Black Excellence. One story I edited touched so many viewers. It was a brief historical perspective of Obama becoming president thus fulfilling the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King. It was because of that story that I decided to switch careers and pursue my dream to become an Editor.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? The best piece of advice I have been given is, Always Dream the Impossible Dream.

If you could time travel, when would you go and why? If I could travel back in time, it would be back to 1990. It was a time when many of my family members were still alive and well. I was 9 years old and surrounded by so much love, felt safe, and had so much confidence that I could conquer the world.

What’s a little known fact about you? What are your hidden (or not so hidden) talents? I play the clarinet, trumpet, and make a really good pizza!

What’s your personal/professional mantra? “Trust the Process.” Life may not move the way you want it to, but if you trust the process, your life will go where it’s supposed to be.

What’s the last show/movie that left you speechless? The most recent movie that left me speechless was “Antebellum.” With the unfortunate racial divide and state of affairs that exist in our country today, I was stunned at the end of the movie, and it left me thinking, could this really happen—or IS this really happening today???

What would be your dream project to work on?
I would love to work on any movie with editors Maysie Hoy, ACE or Joi McMillon, ACE. I value and admire their skills and accomplishments and feel that I could learn so much from working on a project with them.

What’s your job? Picture Editor

List the credits you’re most proud of. “Transformers: Robots in Disguise.” It was my first union credit, so it’s special to me.

What are you working on right now? Nickelodeon’s “Toymation.” We recreate popular scenes from Nick shows like “SpongeBob” and “Rise of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” using live action toys. It’s silly, cute and fun.

Who and what are your influences and/or mentors? Toussaint Louverture, Barack Obama, John Singleton, Dave Chappelle, Robert Rodriguez.

What books are you reading, shows are you watching and/or movies you’re  excited about? I’m currently reading “Ready Player One. I’m excited for any shows or movies that are part of the Marvel cinematic universe.

What would be your superhero name? McFleury

What are your black history month memories and any cultural or historical  impacts on your life? In 1804 Haiti became the first Black Republic. A group of Haitian freedom fighters defeated Napoleon and his army to gain their independence. This is one of the most defining moments for Africans across the world. They are my heroes.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Do something you love so you don’t ever have to work a day in your life.

What’s a little known fact about you? What are your hidden (or not so hidden) talents? I’m fluent in French.

What’s your favorite (Black) television/movie moment? On “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” when Will had to confront the truth about his father.

Was there a television show/movie that inspired you to pursue your career? “El Mariachi” and “Boyz N the Hood.”

What’s the last show/movie that left you speechless? “Avengers: Endgame”

What would be your dream project to work on? “Black Panther”

Cut to Black: Alice Walker, Author

Alice Walker, Author

Born February 9th, 1944, in Eatonton, Georgia, Author, and Poet Alice Walker has celebrated African American Culture throughout her successful career and life. The AASC would like to take a moment to honor and celebrate Ms. Walker’s influential work: “The Color Purple.” It had an enduring run first as a novel, was made into a celebrated motion picture, and finally became a Broadway musical.

Written in 1982, “The Color Purple” takes the reader to experience life through the eyes of Celie, a fourteen-year-old girl in 1930’s Georgia. Throughout four decades, we travel along with Celie as she carves a life for herself in the face of incest, sexism, and of course, Southern racism. Ms. Walker takes an engaging approach by telling this story through letters. Mainly from Celie to God, but also to Celie from her family and friends.

Though controversial, the book received critical acclaim in 1983. Winning both the Pulitzer and National Book Award while drawing the attention of Director Steven Spielberg. In a career-defining role as Celie, Whoopi Goldberg won audiences over with her phenomenal performance. Featuring a cast of Danny Glover, Margaret Avery, Adolph Caesar, Rae Dawn Chong, and newcomer Oprah Winfrey.

Released in 1985 and filmed on location in North Carolina, the movie was a box office success, grossing $142 million against a budget of $15 million. The film received 23 nominations and won 14 awards. Including a Golden Globe, NAACP Image Award, and National Board of Review accolades for Ms. Goldberg. “The Color Purple: The Musical” opened on Broadway in 2005 and won two Tony Awards. The play is currently running internationally, with a film adaptation of The Musical scheduled for release in 2023.

Ms. Walker graced African American Culture with a modern classic in “The Color Purple.” And we are grateful for it.

Cut to Black: Alex Robinson, Picture Editor

What’s your job? Picture Editor

List the credits you’re most proud of. “Chicago PD” and “Chicago Med” because they are my first scripted series.

What are you working on right now? “Chicago PD”

Who and what are your influences and/or mentors? Spike Lee’s work inspired me to take a shot at the film industry. Lillian Benson, ACE has been my primary mentor since I made the transition from Reality TV to Scripted Television. I’ve also received significant support and mentorship from the ACE Diversity Mentorship Program.

What books are you reading, shows are you watching and/or movies you’re excited about? I’m currently reading “The Wise Heart” by Jack Kornfield.  The movies I most recently watched were “Minari,” edited by the great Harry Yoon, ACE which was amazing, “One Night in Miami” which was also amazing, and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” which I really enjoyed. As for TV, I just finished” Save Me” and season 4 of “Star Trek: Discovery.” I’m looking forward to the new season of “Euphoria.”

What would be your superhero name? Alex Robinson

What are your black history month memories and any cultural or historical impacts on your life? As an ad agency producer earlier in my career (February 2002), I produced a commercial honoring Langton Hughes for the US Postal Service’s Black Heritage commemorative stamp series. He’s always been one of my favorite writers so I was proud to be a part of honoring him during Black History Month.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Always make the most of every opportunity.

If you could time travel, when would you go and why? I’d travel back to the Harlem Renaissance in hopes of having the opportunity to spend time with the likes of Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston and other artists who’s work helped to define the period. As an English major who spent the most enjoyable years of my adult life (so far) in New York City, I’ve always been fascinated by the period.

What’s a little known fact about you? What are your hidden (or not so hidden) talents? I was born in Moscow, Idaho. My hidden talent is I can make a pretty good cup of coffee.

What’s your favorite (Black) television/movie moment?  I first saw “Do the Right Thing” in high school. Spike Lee’s work inspired me to take a shot at the film industry. I always loved the moment when Ossie Davis’s character, Da Mayor, tells Mookie, “Always do the right thing.”

Was there a television show/movie that inspired you to pursue your career? When I first saw “Do the Right Thing” in high school, Spike Lee first put the thought of a career in film in my head.

What’s your personal/professional mantra? Do the work. Always do the work and you can figure out the rest later.

What’s the last show/movie that left you speechless? I was pretty blown away by “Parasite.” The first season of “Euphoria” also left me pretty stunned.

What would be your dream project to work on? My dream project would be to work on the “Do the Right Thing” of the 21st century.

Cut to Black: Martha Lowe, Assistant Editor

What’s your job? Assistant Editor

List the credits you’re most proud of. My 1st union gig: Worked as an additional Assistant Editor on HBO’s “Euphoria.”
What are you working on right now? An independent feature.
Who and what are your influences and/or mentors? I love the work of Stephen Mirrione, and have had the opportunity to meet and chat with some very accomplished editors just within the last year.

What books are you reading, shows are you watching and/or movies you’re excited about? I fell in love with everything about “Bridgerton” and “The Queen’s Gambit.” I’ve also just started watching an older show that started airing on Netflix… “Black Lightning!” Loving it!
What are your black history month memories and any cultural or historical impacts on your life? Historically, I’m happy to have lived in a time to see an African American President and female Vice President of color.
If you could time travel, when would you go and why? For the fashion alone, I would go to the Regency era as in “Bridgerton.” I love fashion and the costume design for this show is AMAZING!! The music is so AWESOME too! I would also love to travel in the circles of the artists from the Harlem Renaissance once again for the fashion, but especially to just be in the same room with artists like Zora Neal Hurston and Langston Hughes.
What’s a little known fact about you? What are your hidden (or not so hidden) talents? Not ‘so hidden’ talent — I’m a dancing machine! I love shaking my booty! I also trap, neuter and release (TNR) the feral cats in my neighborhood. I’ve worked with a non-profit to get them neutered/spayed, vaccinated and then release them back into the community.
What’s your favorite (Black) television/movie moment? Has to be “Imitation of Life” – the 1959 version. As many times as I’ve seen it, I always shed a tear during the funeral procession.
Was there a television show/movie that inspired you to pursue your career? I actually stumbled upon post production. I can say that I do love the serendipitous theme of “Sliding Doors.” It fascinates me how the smallest, most minute moment can make a huge effect in your life. I also loved to see how effective parallel editing can be.
What’s your personal/professional mantra? “If it’s not fun…I’m out!”
What’s the last show/movie that left you speechless? “Boys Don’t Cry” with Hilary Swank. Such a tough movie to watch. I was thinking about that film months after I watched it. Its still kind of haunting…
What would be your dream project to work on? “Bridgerton” or anything that would give me the opportunity to work with Stephen Mirrione.

What’s your job? I work as an Assistant Editor or Editor depending on the project.

List the credits you’re most proud of. For the record all of them, but projects like “The X-Factor,” “Speechless,” “Atypical,” and “Beyond the Steps: Alvin Ailey American Dance” have been significant as they have helped in more ways then one to propel my career in some way.

What are you working on right now? Season 7 of ABC’s award-winning comedy “Black-ish.”

Who and what are your influences and/or mentors? My family has a huge impact on my life. My parents are great role models, and have fostered a limitless attitude in their own life and in the lives of their children. My siblings are achieving amazing things in their own fields which inspire me everyday to try to be great at what I do. In my field I’ve gotten great mentorship from a lot of people, but the biggest impact for me is Lillian E. Benson, ACE. I first worked with Ms. Benson in 2005 and for 16 years she has been a great friend and mentor, and at this point she is basically family, because no matter what I do she always finds out. I’d also have to spotlight editors like Jacques Gravett, ACE and Christopher Cooke, ACE. Both have been instrumental to me; Chris really pushed me to think outside the box, and TO pay attention to details, and Jacques really took the time to show me how to take my talents to the next level, and for that I’ll be forever grateful.

What books are you reading, shows are you watching and/or movies you’re excited about? Books: Elaine Meryl Brown “Lemon City” AND William Gibson “Neuromancer”. Shows: “The Expanse,” Amazon, “Lovecraft Country,” HBO, “Dark,” Netflix, “The Mandalorian,” Disney+. Movies: “One Night In Miami,” Amazon.

What would be your superhero name? Half-Man Half-Amazing.

What are your Black History Month memories and any cultural or historical impacts on your life? Growing up in black communities every day was Black History Month. My father has been a doctor for 49 years, and has been doing house calls in the community since the 70’s and my mother has been a nurse in the community for 47 years. Going on house calls with my father and visiting the various health care jobs my mother has held, showed me how to achieve my goals while not forgetting who I am, and the pride that should come with that. Seeing the respect the community has for my parents because of their service is the kind of inspiration not often shared publicly about us. One of the reasons why this month is so vastly important for American history. Another cultural impact on my life would be when I meet Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis and LisaGay Hamilton at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. It was for Mrs. Hamilton’s film called, “Beah: A Black Woman Speaks.” Being able to talk shop, watch a film, and get advice from them has helped me stay inspired at what I do.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Live the life you love, and love the life you live.

If you could time travel, when would you go and why? Somewhere in the future where space traveling is the norm. I would like to explore other planets freely.

What’s a little known fact about you? What are your hidden (or not so hidden) talents? Most people don’t know I used to work in music before getting into tv and film. I worked for Bystorm Entertainment, which is a record label started by The Notorious B.I.G along with Mark Pitts his Manager.

What’s your personal/professional mantra? Namaste.

What’s the last show/movie that left you speechless? I don’t know about speechless, but “Tenet “left me with the feeling that I just watched a movie. I don’t get that feeling all the time even with films I like.

What would be your dream project to work on? A really good suspense thriller tv series or film.

Cut to Black: Madeline Anderson, Picture Editor

Madeline Anderson, Picture Editor

Madeline Anderson as born in 1924 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Madeline is quoted as saying, “When I was growing up, I was an avid moviegoer in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I used to go to the movies every Saturday and stay in there all day long. So, I loved movies from a very early age. I also saw how black people were depicted, and then also [things like] Tarzan and the Apes and Gene Autry films. We were always depicted as being not too smart and we didn’t have clothes on, and the white man was always smarter. It was not an image that made you proud of who you were. So I decided that I was going to be a filmmaker. I was going to depict proud black people.” (Metrograph edition 1917)

An early job during her college years was babysitting for New York City based independent and documentary filmmaker Richard Leacock. He gave her the connection she needed to move into the world of television and cinema. Anderson is credited as the first American born black woman to produce and direct a TV documentary, (“Integration Report I,” 1960 and “I Am Somebody,” 1970) the first to direct and produce a syndicated TV series (“Sesame Street,” 1974), one of the first black women to join the film editors union.

Madeline was asked what role the advent of television played in the 1960s in terms of defining careers, “When I started out in the film industry, there were no film schools. The way you learned was by becoming someone’s assistant. That wasn’t easy for us, because if you weren’t a son or related to someone in the industry, no one would hire you. I was fortunate enough to meet Ricky Leacock while I was at NYU. He and his wife were such supporters of mine and I took advantage of every opportunity that came along… When you’re in the industry and you start having a track record, that’s how you get jobs. It was very difficult for Black people to gain a track record because we didn’t know who was in the union, and who were our ‘friends.’ Luckily, I had Ricky, D.A. Pennebaker, and Shirley Clarke in my corner, and I worked in that space for two years, so people began to know about me. When I worked with Shirley, (“The Cool World,” 1963), she treated the crew so wonderfully. Now, she was working with Frederick Wiseman at the time, he was the producer. They wanted to get this film into theatrical release, and so had to have union workers in the editing room—the editor was a wonderful African American man, Hugh Robertson. I was Shirley’s assistant in everything. When we were on location shooting, I was the script clerk and the AD. When we were in the editing room, I was her assistant and took care of the organization. Hugh and Shirley got me an application to the editor’s union. That was the beginning of my fight to get into the union, because now I was legitimate: I had a job on a union production. It was a wonderful thing for me. I got my foot in the door. After that, I was on my way.” (Metrograph edition 1917)

Cut to Black: Christine Armstrong, Picture Editor

What’s your job? Picture Editor

List the credits you’re most proud of. “The New Romantic,” “#BLACKAF,” “Sugar Daddy” and “American Reject.”

What are you working on right now? I’m currently working on a new comedy show called “Rutherford Falls” created by Sierra Teller Ornelas, Mike Schur and Ed Helms. It is set to air on Peacock.

Who and what are your influences and/or mentors? There are many influences that brought me to becoming an editor. My first passion was acting which has been a handy skill to have as an editor when picking performances. Through my passion for film making, I was inspired by Steven Spielberg and Michel Godry’s films and their amazing visual storytelling they had in their films. I also love the editing in all of Edgar Wright’s movies. As for mentors, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with/ working with a lot of editors/producers who have given me guidance such as Shannon Baker Davis. ACE, Nena Erb, ACE, Jamie Nelson, Susan Federman and Joi McMillion, ACE. Thank you so much.

What books are you reading, shows are you watching and/or movies you’re excited about? I am currently watching “Blood of Zeus,” “Raised by Wolves,” “Alice in Borderland” and rewatching some comedies such as “HIMYM,” “Entourage,” “Silicon Valley,” and “Community.”

What would be your superhero name? Charms-Strong

What are your Black History Month memories and any cultural or historical impacts on your life? The biggest moment in black history that has impacted me is Rosa Parks’ quiet protest on the bus. It reminds me that you don’t need to be loud to be a leader, and to trust your gut and stay true to your path no matter what, and don’t let obstacles and fear get in your way. Rosa’s small action started a ripple effect of change which is all it takes.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Not all storms come to disrupt your life. Some come to clear the path

If you could time travel, when would you go and why? Probably into the future. I’m curious to see how technology advances and where we end up going. (fingers crossed for flying cars lol )

What’s a little known fact about you? What are your hidden (or not so hidden) talents? I play the piano, saxophone, and flute, and I love to sing:). I am also good at strategy board games haha.

What’s your favorite (Black) television/movie moment? Does it count as a TV moment when “Moonlight” won at the Oscars? haha Also for some reason that “Fresh Prince of Belair” episode when Will cries about his dad always resonated with me. Such a good performance.

Was there a television show/movie that inspired you to pursue your career? “Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind” sticks out to me because of the visual storytelling and editing style of the film, It is so distinctive yet seamless.

What’s your personal/professional mantra? Do good work, always look for ways to improve my skills, and challenge myself, and work with good people:)

What’s the last show/movie that left you speechless? The first episode of “Alice in Borderland” really brought you in.

What would be your dream project to work on? I would love to work on an action film for one of the big studios or a reunion episode of one of my favorite tv shows.
